Lawrence Walter “LW” Newsom Age: 93,  born September 6, 1921  died April 1, 2015  

Mr. Lawrence Walter Newsom, 93, of Winston-Salem, NC, passed away on Wednesday, April 1, 2015 at Forsyth Medical Center. Lawrence was born on September 6, 1921 in Iredell County, NC to Henry and Treva Newsom. Mr. Newsom was a faithful member of Salem Baptist Church for his entire life. He was a veteran of World War II. He was a business owner for himself for 24 years and he was able to retire at the age of 62 at which time he turned to serving his family and his friends until his death. Lawrence was also an avid checker player and he won many tournaments..

Mr. Newsom is preceded in death by his parents. In addition to his loving wife of 71 years, Evelyn Newsom he is survived by five children, Ruth N. Deaton (Carlton) of Winston-Salem, Jean N. Myers (Joseph) of Mesa, AZ., Donald R. Newsom, Ronald G. Newsom both of Kernersville, and Martha N. Mendenhall (Keith) of Lexington; one brother, John Odell Newsom (Edyth) of Winston-Salem; 13 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; and one brother-in-law, Hal Davis of Winston-Salem. A funeral service will be held at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel on Monday, April 6, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Joe Myers and Dr. Howard Wilburn officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Interment will be private with family only.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to Salem Baptist Church. 429S. Broad St, Winston-Salem NC, 27101.

Letter from Joe McClellan in memory of Mr. Newsom.

Mr. L.W. Newsom and Joe McClellan would frequently come together to play NC State, District IV, and local tournaments and it was a time to get a little history and some stories about the Winston-Salem Greats and Winston-Salem YMCA Chess & Checker Association which was the largest group of players and some of the strongest in North Carolina in the 50's and 60's. I particularly like to hear about Harry Anderson who did the original research and history on North Carolina Checker Association.  These two also helped me with the NC Obituaries of the above players. L.W. was a fine gentleman and will definitely be missed at our tournament.
